ABSTRACT. A revised value for the heat of formation of nitrate ion has been obtained by re-evaluating the lattice energy of cesium nitrate with consideration of charge distribution in the anion. With the revised value for ΔHƒ (NO3-) the Born-Haber cycle yields a lattice energy of —157 kcal./mole for nitrogen pentoxide.
